Looking to shore up the Bulldog pitching rotation for years to come, head coach Bob Rients signed two talented prepsters on the last day of the early spring sports signing period, November 20, 2007. Mark Shaver and Kyle Dahl will suit up for UMD in the spring of 2009 and represent the first two recruits to commit to coach Rients for next season.
Shaver, a Roberts, Wis., native is a right-handed pitcher for St. Croix Central High School. The six-footer has raked in some pretty impressive accolades during his time in a Panthers uniform, including a spot on the All- Dunn-St. Croix Conference First Team his junior year and earned an honorable mention as a sophomore. The last two seasons, Shaver has been tabbed as the pitcher of the year among Panther hurlers and, as a sophomore, Shaver tossed a no-hitter for St. Croix Central head coach Mike Fern. Shaver has also earned three letters as a member of the Panther wrestling team.
“Mark's work ethic and desire to be the best are second to none,” said Rients. “He is a fierce competitor on the mound and we are excited for him to have an impact with our program next year.”
A left-handed pitcher, Dahl will be worked into the lineup both on the mound as well as in the outfield, when he suits up for the Bulldog Nine in the spring of 2009. The Minnetonka High School southpaw was selected as a Classic Lake All-Conference honorable mention his junior year and has earned two varsity letters thus far, from Skippers’ head coach Paul Twenge. Dahl, a six-footer, is a native of Excelsior, Minn.
“Kyle is a battle-tested player, having pitched against some of the best teams during the spring and summer seasons," Rients said. "Adding a talented left-handed pitcher such as Kyle, who can also play in the outfield, allows us to address two needs in this year's recruiting class.”
“It was very important for us to sign these two high-caliber pitchers in the first signing period," Rients said about his signees. "They are the first steps taken in this recruiting class to improve our success on the mound and are both quality student-athletes who we are eager to get on campus next fall.”
(All signings are contingent upon admission to the University and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.)
