NO. 8 UMD FALLS TO ADAMS STATE, REBOUNDS AGAINST MESA STATE

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Losing is not something the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team is quite familiar with.

However, in their opening match of the Marriott Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., the Bulldogs received their first blemish of the 2008 season, losing a five-game thriller to Adams State College (Colo.) 3-2 (23-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, 12-15).

UMD (5-1) opened up the match slow, dropping the first two games, but battled back to win the next two and send it to the final game, unfortunately losing by just three points.

Bulldog junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels led UMD with 17 kills, a .325 hitting percentage, six block assists and five digs, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont added 11 kills and four block assists.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson tallied 11 kills and 12 digs, as fellow freshman outside blocker April Hansen recorded ten kills along with four block assists in the loss.

In the dig department, junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson paced UMD with 15, as sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen dug 13 balls.

Senior All-American setter Katie Gangelhoff also saw her first action of her 2008 campaign, returning strong from a leg injury, racking up an eye-popping 51 set assists in the five-game affair.

Though coming off their first loss of the year, UMD bounced back to earn an impressive victory in their second match of evening, by sweeping Mesa State College (Colo.) 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-22).

Captains, Clairmont, Gangelhoff and Wyffels all directed the Bulldogs to the win.

Clairmont led UMD with 13 kills, a .522 hit percentage and a team-high five block assists, while Wyffels posted 12 kills and a .524 hit percentage. Gangelhoff had another stellar match, tallying a total of 38 set assists, as Jacobson added 15 digs in the evening clash.

The evening split moves the Bulldogs to 5-1 on the year, as they will continue tournament play tomorrow as they are set to square off with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe, No. 16 Southwest Minnesota State at 11 a.m., followed by tournament host, Colorado-Colorado Springs at 6 p.m.
