NO. 8 BULLDOGS SWEPT BY NO. 16 SW MINNESOTA STATE, BREEZE BY UC-COLORADO SPRINGS

It is no easy task to beat the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team.
But today, fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe, No. 16 Southwest Minnesota State, made that feat look easy as they swept the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-27, 22-25, 21-25) at the Marriott Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
UMD (6-2) kept things close throughout the whole match however couldn't quite knock off the Mustangs in the morning contest.
Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff led the Bulldogs with 30 set assists and a .583 hitting percentage, along with seven kills.
Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels paced UMD in kills with nine and a .350 hit percentage, as senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont posted eight kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
Sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen recorded 14 digs for the Bulldogs, while freshman defensive specialist Allison Fanta added 11 in the loss.
This evening, UMD got even, as they destroyed tournament host Colorado-Colorado Springs 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21).
Leading the attack for the Bulldogs was Wyffels, who posted eleven kills, and a .500 hit percentage to go along with three block assists.
Clairmont also totaled ten kills, while freshman middle blocker April Hansen recorded eight and freshman setter Eleena Iisakka had 40 set assists.
B. Hansen dug a game-high 17 balls, as Fanta and freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson each ended with 12 digs in the Bulldog victory.
For their stellar weekend efforts, both Wyffels and Clairmont were named to the All-Tournament Team.
UMD's 2-2 posting at the tournament moved their overall record to 6-2 this fall.
The Bulldogs will now open the doors to Romano Gymnasium, as they will host the always entertaining UMD Classic next weekend on Sept. 12-13.
