WELCOME HOME BULLDOGS! NO. 12 UMD SWEEPS BEAVERS 3-0

Friday, September 12, 2008

Determined to open it's 2008 home volleyball schedule in winning fashion, No. 12 University of Minnesota Duluth quickly dispatched Bemidji State University with a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) Friday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.

"Its nice to be back on our home floor," said head coach Jim Boos. "There is a certain comfort level we have here."

The UMD victory, which represented the second of nine matches to be played at Romano Gymnasium as part of the 3rd annual Kraus Anderson Volleyball Classic, moved the Bulldogs (7-2) one step closer to defending their title captured one year ago.

Tonight, the Bulldogs hit the court once again to battle the University of New Haven (Conn.) at 7:30 p.m., the first meeting between the two programs since 1992.

Facing the Beavers, junior middle blocker, Sarah Wyffels, pounded home ten kills for the Bulldogs, while she also recorded a .556 hitting percentage in the win.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson also added to the UMD attack, as she posted a .412 hit percentage with nine kills, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont tallied seven kills and blocked four balls in the afternoon affair.

Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff paced the Bulldogs with 36 set assists, while Johnson and junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson each posted six digs.

As a team, UMD used a relentless attack, collecting a total of 38 kills, ten more than Bemidji State was able to notch. The Bulldogs also improved to 77-3 against the Beavers all-time.

"I saw some great things out here this afternoon," said Boos. "We are cleaning up the mistakes, but we still have room to improve."
