CHALK UP ANOTHER, NO. 12 UMD KNOCKS OFF CHARGERS, IMPROVE TO 8-2

Friday, September 12, 2008

In what might have been the biggest test all season for the No. 12 University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball squad, the Bulldogs swept the University of New Haven (Conn.) 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-17) Friday night in front of 535 fans at Romano Gymnasium.

The Bulldog victory, which was the fifth of nine matches to be held on their home floor this weekend as a part of the 3rd annual Kraus Anderson Volleyball Classic, inched UMD (8-2) closer to defending their crown from a year ago.

Saturday, the Bulldogs, who haven't lost a set all tournament, will hit the hardwood twice, as they are first set to collide with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference colleague, Minnesota State University-Mankato at 12:30 p.m.

That match is only to be followed by a clash of top-15 teams, when UMD faces off against No. 9 Western Washington University at 5:30 p.m.

Against the Chargers, the Bulldogs found themselves in a see-saw like battle, as UMD was down early, but managed to fight back and win all three sets.

"We came out a little flat," said head coach Jim Boos. "But turned it up when the match mattered most."

Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels led the Bulldog attack as she killed a game-high 15 balls to go along with her .394 hit percentage.

Fellow freshmen, middle blocker April Hansen and outside hitter Hannah Johnson also joined the fun, as they each posted eight kills, while senior setter Katie Gangelhoff tallied 37 set assists and five kills on the evening.

Johnson, along with junior defensive specialst Rachel Jacobson, dug 13 balls each, while sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen added 11 digs in the back-and fourth affair.

When all said and done, the Bulldog attack totalled 47 kills, 11 more than the visiting Chargers.

"Tonight was a hard faught battle," said Boos. "Its nice for us come out on top in matches like this."

In other tournament action, Western Washington defeated MSU-Mankato 3-2, while MSU-Mankato knocked off New Haven 3-1 and Western Washington topped Bemidji State 3-1.

Day two of the Classic kicks off Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. in Romano Gymnasium, when Western Washington meets New Haven.
