UMD EARNS HARD-FOUGHT 10-9 VICTORY OVER AUGUSTANA THURSDAY NIGHT
Thursday, March 5, 2009
A three-run final inning propelled a 10-9 come-from-behind victory for the University of Minnesota Duluth against Augustana (S.D.) College Thursday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Scheduled as a non-conference doubleheader among the two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members, only one game could officially get on the books, as their allotted time on the FieldTurf expired in the fifth inning of the nightcap.
The Bulldogs (4-4) took charge in the first game early on, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before the Vikings (5-5) could even dig in to the batter's box for the first time. Senior co-captain David Olson was largely to thank for that. The third baseman/catcher from Lakeville, Minn., swatted a three-run bomb, plating juniors Bryan Denisen and Will Dahlgren in the process. The big fly was the second on the year for Olson.
Junior designated hitter Scott Sorenson accounted for the other run - doubling in sophomore first baseman Josh Threlkeld - corking his third two-bagger and upping his runs batted in total to three, in 2009.
The Vikings responded with a home run of their own, a two-run round-tripper off the bat of Nate Baumann, in the bottom half of the first frame. UMD proceeded to score one run each in their next three at-bats, raising their favorable margin to 7-2 after 3.5 innings.
Buoyed in large part by well-placed hits and a few Bulldog miscues, Augustana brought home seven combined runs - three in the fourth, four in the fifth - over the course of the next two innings, grabbing their first lead at 9-7 after five full stanzas of play.
UMD was up to overcoming the daunting deficit in their last plate appearance, however, with Denisen and Dahlgren sparking another offensively-active inning, this time via a hit by pitch and single through the right side of the infield. The Bulldogs used another single, an error and a sacrifice fly, to plate three runs and headed into the home portion of the seventh with the scoreboard showing 10-9, in their favor.
"Augustana is a team we didn't have much success against last season," said head coach Bob Rients. "To be able to come out, take control of the game, and then battle for the win was a good mental thing for our guys."
Freshman lefty Adam Cook had the task of holding the Vikings in their final at-bat, and hold he did. The New Hope, Minn., native pitched a near-perfect frame, striking out one batter in earning his first collegiate win, in just his second mound appearance while sporting a maroon and gold uniform.
UMD starter Josh Foreman went four full innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits, getting the no-decision. Tyler Pierson (0-3) gave up the three runs in the seventh after pitching two scoreless innings prior to that, getting saddled with the loss in the process.
Olson finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Denisen, Dahlgren, freshman shortstop Tyler Erickson and sophomore right fielder Justin Baker each had two hits, for the Bulldogs.
UMD is now inactive until it leaves for the sunny skies of Florida, next week. The Bulldogs will play nine games in six days in their annual spring break trip (from March 13-18), taking on some familiar foes in the warm settings. UMD's first game in the Sunshine State is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, March 13 against NSIC rival University of Minnesota-Crookston.
