UMD SOCCER FALLS 2-1 IN SEASON OPENER ON THURSDAY
Friday, August 29, 2008
The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team opened up its 2008 campaign this afternoon, getting edged out 2-1 by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
The Rangers jumped out early on in the contest, as Meredith Novak netted a feed from Kelly Teeters past UMD sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson at the 14:45 mark, to give UW-Parkside a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs answered quickly with their own strike nearly three minutes later, as sophomore Maria Leider headed in a corner kick boot from junior Hannah Nygaard. There were multiple firsts coming about as a result of the goal. Not only was it the initial strike of the year for the Bulldogs as a team, but it represented the first collegiate goal for Leider, a Duluth, Minn., native, as well as assist number one for Nygaard in her playing time at UMD.
The two teams played the next 60-plus minutes even until, at 80:56 into the game, Shannon Becker gained possession of the ball for the Rangers in the UMD zone. From about 30 yards out, she booted a shot passed a caught-off-guard Bengtson for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Bulldogs had a tough time placing the ball on net, landing two of their ten total shots on target, compared to seven out of 11for UW-Parkside.
UMD will next move on to Marquette, Mich. to tango with Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe St. Cloud State University as part of the Wildcat Soccer Invite, hosted by Northern Michigan University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
Also, there is a date and time change for the Bulldogs' home opener against Mesa State College. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5 at 8:00 p.m., but has been pushed up to Thursday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at James S. Malosky Stadium.
