D.J. Winfield had one of the shorter college debuts in University of Minnesota Duluth football history. His Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference debut, however, could go down as one of the more memorable. The freshman wide receiver, who played a little over a quarter in last year's opener against Bemidji State University before incurring a season-ending ankle injury, caught seven passes for 137 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns (including a 48-yard jaunt off a lateral) in helping spark the Bulldogs to a 40-0 road victory over Concordia University-St. Paul Saturday night.

UMD, which was making its first NSIC appearance since leaving that circuit for the now-defunct North Central Conference in 2004, have won nine straight season openers.

"It felt good for me to get back out there after such a long layoff," said Winfield, a native of Mountain Iron, Minn. who was granted a extra year of eligibility as a medical redshirt. "This was a statement game for us being that we are in a new conference. I think that we are a much more balanced team offensively this season and right now we have some great team chemistry."

UMD limited the Golden Bears to just 112 yards of total offense (minus-15 on the ground) and racked up six quarterback sacks while handing Concordia its first shutout loss in 91 games dating back to 1999. It also marked the first blanking by a Bulldog club since Oct. 18, 2003 (28-0 vs. the University of Minnesota Crookston).

Bulldog senior quarterback Ted Schlafke, who was making his 33rd consecutive start, completed 14 of 20 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown before giving way to first-year freshman Jon Lynch late in the fourth quarter. With that effort, Schlafke became UMD's all-time leader in passing yardage with 8,769 -- 58 yards more than the previous record holder, Ricky Fritz (1998-2002). Isaac Odim, a transfer from Rochester Community College, rushed for a game-high 66 yards on 10 carries while fellow sophomore running back Brad Foss ran 11 times for 65 yards and two touchdowns. In all, 52 of 55 members of the Bulldog travel roster saw field time, including nose guard Tyler Johnson, who snatched an errant Golden Bear pass and lumbered 25 yards for a first-quarter touchdown which put UMD up 13-0.

The Bulldogs, who rolled up 443 yards of total offense on the night, will engage in their only non-conference activity of 2008 next Saturday when they make a first-ever trip to St. Joseph, Mo. to take on Missouri Western State University.
