RAINY DAY BLUES: BULLDOGS DOWNED 1-0 BY FORT LEWIS ON SUNDAY

Sunday, September 7, 2008

On a chilly and rainy Sunday afternoon at James S. Malosky Stadium, the University of Minnesota Duluth (0-5) came up just short to Fort Lewis College (2-2), losing a tightly contested match 1-0 in Duluth, Minn.

The first 30 minutes of the game were controlled primarily by the Bulldogs. A great chance for UMD came at the 21:36 mark, when sophomore forward Brittany Brown's well-placed shot was just barely pushed aside by the sprawling Skyhawk goalkeeper.

The teams entered half time locked at 0-0, with the rain coming down in sheets during the intermission.

Fort Lewis came out on the attack in the start of the second half, and 53:38 into the game, it was able to capitalize on a Bulldog error. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson's pass found the foot of Erica Shisler for the Skyhawks. Through three UMD defenders, Shisler was able to boot the ball just out of the reach of Bengtson's outstretched hands and into the Bulldog goal for the eventual game-winner.

Few other chances arose for UMD, save a header at the 84:49 mark by sophomore defender Maria Leider that unfortunately was directed straight at the Skyhawk goalie.

The Bulldogs will next travel to Marquette, Mich., to take on Northern Michigan University this Friday, Sept. 12.  The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time.
