Friday, September 26, 2008
Determined to keep their volleyball record perfect in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, No. 14-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth dispatched another victory, as they defeated the University of Upper Iowa 3-1 (25-10, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) in front of 572 faithful at Romano Gymnasium Friday night.
The win was the Bulldogs (13-3 overall; 4-0 NSIC) fourth straight, as they used a solid team effort to put away the Peacocks (8-6; 1-3).
As a team, UMD pounded home 59 kills, 12 more than Upper Iowa, as well as seven blocks, compared to the Peacocks who could only muster a single block on the night.
The head of the Bulldog attack was sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos, who killed a game-high 14 balls, while she added a pair of digs and compiled a .344 hit percentage.
Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels also had a solid performance as she totaled 12 kills for a .310 hit percentage and collected a game-high five solo blocks in the win, four more than Upper Iowa had on the night.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Lamers added to the fun, as she tallied nine kills and nine digs for a .500 hit percentage, while senior setter Katie Gangelhoff added seven digs and set 49 balls, five more than the visiting Peacocks could collect as a team.
