NO. 15 BULLDOGS CONTINUE TO ROLL; BLAST MARY 44-7

Saturday, September 27, 2008

Different day. Different opponent. Same result.

For the fifth time in as many weeks, the University of Minnesota Duluth disposed of its opponent in dominating fashion. The 15th ranked Bulldogs scored on their first three possessions and never looked back in a convincing 44-7 rout of the University of Mary at Malosky Stadium Saturday afternoon.

UMD drew first blood on sophomore running back Isaac Odim’s 17-yard touchdown run just over two minutes into the opening quarter. Odim finished with 96 yards on 10 carries for two scores, as well as a 15-yard touchdown reception while helping the Bulldog go to 5-0 overall (4-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) for the first time since 2002.

“We haven’t seen that type of defense yet this year,” said Odim, who transferred to UMD this fall from Rochester Community College. “We prepared for them all week, and it always helps to practice our game plan against a first-team defense that’s as tough as ours is.”

The Bulldogs preparation paid off, as the offense racked up 535 yards on 80 total plays (both season highs). Senior quarterback and Harlon Hill hopeful Ted Schlafke completed 17 of 23 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions before giving way to true freshman Jon Lynch midway through the third quarter. Schlafke’s favorite target was freshman wide receiver D.J. Winfield, who caught a career-high 10 passes for 172 yards and one score (a 42-yard strike) – all of which came in the first half.

“We were ready to face all of their coverage schemes, and it felt good to come out and score right away,” said Winfield, UMD’s leading pass receiver in 2008 with 30 catches.

The defense was equally as dominant, holding Mary (2-3; 2-2) to just 178 total yards of offense, including 22 in the first 30 minutes of play (to go with just one first down). UMD, meanwhile, countered with 403 yards and 21 first downs while jumping to 34-0 lead during that same time span.

First-year freshman David Nadeau booted three field goals and added five extra points for a 14-point afternoon. That equaled the club single-game scoring record for a placekicker originally set by Chad Gerlach in 2002.

The Bulldogs have now scored at least 40 points in five straight games – just the second time that has happened in team history – and have outscored the opposition by a whopping 214-56 margin.

UMD will head to Moorhead, Minn. next Saturday for an NSIC engagement with Minnesota State University-Moorhead..
