SOCCER BULLDOGS FALL 1-0 ON SUNDAY DESPITE STRONG EFFORT AGAINST NO. 3 WINONA STATE
Sunday, October 5, 2008
One mistake by the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team proved to be all No. 3 Winona State University needed to come out on top 1-0 on Sunday at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
UMD (3-7-2 overall; 3-1-2 NSIC) regulated the tempo of play throughout the first half of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match, with more than one great scoring chance arising for the home squad. At the 28:32 mark, sophomore forward Brittany Brown was able to place a shot on net that deflected off of Warrior goalkeeper Amanda Diehm. Senior midfielder Danielle Scheuer controlled the ball after the deflection, but could not find a piece of the open net, sailing a shot high and wide of the vacant goal mouth.
WSU (10-1-0; 5-0-0) started off the second half with a renewed sense of energy and caught the Bulldogs in a moment of mental lapse, capitalizing on an opportunity at 47:45 into the game. Leslie Schumacher hit the crossbar for the Warriors, before Lauren Sturdivant broke the scoreless tie by heading the rebound past UMD sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson.
The Bulldogs reapplied the pressure they had during the first half and, at 81:22, freshman defender Reegan Lloyd was able to boot a shot from 30 yards out that the WSU goalkeeper was just able to get in front of and scoop up. The shot by the Woodbury, Minn., native proved to be the last, best chance UMD could muster in its comeback attempt.
Bengtson finished with four saves overall for the Bulldogs, with Diehm making four stops of her own for the Warriors.
UMD finishes its season-long four-game home stand with a 2-1-1 overall record. The Bulldogs are next off to St. Cloud, Minn., next Saturday, Oct. 11, to take on St. Cloud State University. The match will start at 1:00 p.m.
