NO. 16 UMD BACK TO THEIR WINNING WAYS; SWEEP BEAVERS
Tuesday, October 7, 2008
After losing a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches over the weekend, it didn't take the No. 16-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team very long to get back to their winning ways, as they made quick work of conference colleague, Bemidji State University, by sweeping the Beavers 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) Tuesday night in front of 549 fans at BSU Gymnasium in Bemidji, Minn.
The Bulldogs (15-5 overall; 6-2 NSIC) were led by freshman middle blocker April Hansen, who tallied ten kills for a .364 hit percentage, while she added a pair of digs and a block assist in the win over Bemidji State (6-14; 2-6).
Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos also had an impressive night, as she recorded 12 kills for a .208 hit percentage, two digs and a solo block. Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels joined the fun, as she pounded home 12 kills to go with her four digs and two block assists.
Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff out-set her opponent by herself, as she collected 44 set assists, 18 more than the Beavers, to add to her .333 hit percentage, nine digs and three kills. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson also contributed to the victory by posting 12 digs and six kills.
In the dig department, UMD was led by junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson, who dug 17 balls, while sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen ended the night with 12.
As a team, the Bulldogs tallied more kills, assists, digs and recorded a higher hit percentage in their drubbing of Bemidji State.
UMD will finally head home after their three-day road trip, as they are set to face a pair of NSIC foes, in St. Cloud State (2-14; 0-8) Friday night (Oct. 10), followed by the always exciting rivalry match against the defending national champions, No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul (19-1; 8-0) Saturday afternoon.
