NO. 16 BULLDOGS SWEEP HUSKIES; LOOK AHEAD TO NO. 1 CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
Friday, October 10, 2008
In a crucial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home stand for the No. 16-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team, the Bulldogs opened the weekend with a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) of St. Cloud State University Friday night in front of 472 UMD faithful at Romano Gymnasium.
With the win, the Bulldogs (16-5 overall; 7-2 NSIC) improved to 7-1 on their home floor, as they overpowered the visiting Huskies (2-15; 0-9) by totaling more kills, assists, digs and tallying a higher hit percentage.
UMD senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont shined throughout the night by recording match-highs in kills, block assists and hit percentage. The Long Lake, Minn. native pounded home 12 kills, while she added five block assists to her .400 hit percentage in the win.
Also helping the Bulldogs to victory was freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson, who totaled ten kills, nine digs and a .250 hit percentage, while freshman middle blocker April Hansen posted eight kills and a solo block to go with her .240 hit percentage.
Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff again out-set her opponent by setting 42 balls, 18 more than the visiting Huskies, while she added a .333 hit percentage to go along with her eight digs and a pair of kills. UMD junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson also tacked on a match-high 18 digs, while she racked up a pair service aces on the night.
The Bulldogs will now gear up for Hawaiian day in their biggest match of year, as they are set to clash with NSIC rival, No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul (20-1; 9-0), the defending NCAA II national champions and the team who put an end to UMD's dream season a year ago.
The Bulldogs and Golden Bears will collide in the always-entertaining match-up of top-25 teams, tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 11) at 4:00 p.m., on the hardwood of Romano Gymnasium. Fans attending the match are urged to wear their favorite Hawaiian attire, in support of UMD Hawaiian day.
