NO. 9 BULLDOGS THUMP NORTHERN STATE 55-7 ON RECORD-SETTING DAY
Saturday, October 11, 2008
With all the success the University of Minnesota Duluth has enjoyed offensively this year, Bulldog senior quarterback Ted Schlafke has rarely stuck around for the fourth quarter. Yet, even with his somewhat limited playing time, Schlafke has still put up some impressive numbers.
Saturday afternoon, the Harlon Hill hopeful completed 12 of 14 passes – all in the first half – for 166 yards and five touchdowns in leading No. 9 UMD to a 55-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference route of Northern State University at Malosky Stadium.
In the process Schlafke, who has connected 73 percent of his passes this fall and owns an eye-popping 210.5 passing efficiency rating, became UMD’s all-time leader for career touchdown passes. He now has 92 lifetime scoring strikes, two more than the previous record holder, Ricky Fritz (1998-2002).
The Bulldogs also saw a career record fall on the defensive side of the ball. Senior free safety Tyler Yelk finished the day with a seaon-high eight tackles, making him the most prolific tackler in team history. The 2007 All-North Central Conference pick now has 279 stops to his collegiate credit, which eclipsed Kevin Westbrock’s record of 277 set between 1998-2001.
“It was nice to break it here at home and during our homecoming,” said Yelk, who has led the Bulldogs in tackles in each of the past three seasons. “It was also pretty cool to set the mark on the same day Teddy also broke the record for career passing touchdowns”.”
The Bulldogs got the scoring started on sophomore running back Isaac Odim’s 5-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. Northern State responded by stringing together an impressive 16-play, 70-yard scoring drive – the only first-quarter touchdown UMD has allowed this year – knotting the score at 7-7.
“Northern came out moving the ball on their first drive,” said Yelk. “They converted some third-and-long situations. They’re a team that has lost some close games, and they are a lot better than their 1-6 record indicates.”
The Bulldogs caught fire from there, racking up 35 points -- all on Schlafke touchdown throws -- in the second quarter (which equaled a school record), putting the game out of reach by halftime. UMD wound up with 457 yards of total offense on the afternoon while holding the Wolves to just 154 yards, including a mere 15 on the ground. The Bulldogs came into the day sporting the third best scoring, rushing, and total defense in NCAA Division II football. Seven different players scored touchdowns for UMD, which moved to a perfect 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the NSIC. That included freshman tight end Ryan Hayes, who hauled in his first collegiate touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Jon Lynch five minutes into the fourth quarter. The nine-yard scoring strike was the first of Lynch’s career as well.
UMD will look to keep its unbeaten streak alive next Saturday with an NSIC North Division showdown at St. Cloud State University (5-2; 5-1).
