UMD SOCCER USES SECOND HALF OUTBURST ON SUNDAY TO SHADE CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL 2-0
Sunday, October 12, 2008
A spirited second half attack propelled the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Concordia University, St. Paul on Sunday afternoon at Concordia Field in St. Paul, Minn.
The Bulldogs (4-8-2 overall; 4-2-2 NSIC) and Golden Bears (6-9-0; 3-5-0) played fairly even through the first 45 minutes, and the scoreboard displayed the same, with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members heading to half deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
UMD head coach Greg Cane had freshman defender Reegan Lloyd line up to take the opening kick of the second half. Instead of touching a pass off to a teammate in the vicinity, the Woodbury, Minn., native booted the ball towards the Concordia net, with the shot ricocheting off the cross bar and nearly going into the Golden Bear goal. The Bulldogs used Lloyd's near once-in-a-lifetime goal as a catalyst for the second period, racking up a total of 23 shots in the frame compared to Concordia's three.
Sophomore midfielder Abby Boreen was the first to capitalize on a scoring opportunity at 57:54, taking a pass from sophomore defender Maria Leider and ripping the ball past Golden Bear goaltender Keyton Wheelock. Leider received the ball off a throw-in from sophomore midfielder/defender Molli Janni, marking the first point Janni - a native of Coon Rapids, Minn. -- has notched in her time in a Bulldog uniform.
It was Lloyd who scored the insurance goal for UMD, netting an unassisted strike from 30 yards out at the 74:03 mark, upping the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-0, and sealing the deal for the visiting team.
UMD sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson made five saves, and in the process brought her shutout total to five on the season. Wheelock was able to turn aside 12 Bulldog scoring chances for the Golden Bears.
UMD will head back home to Duluth, Minn., and James S. Malosky Stadium, with two NSIC matches slated for next Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 18 and 19). The Bulldogs will first host the University of Mary, before welcoming Northern State University. Both games are set for a 1 p.m. start time, with Sunday's marking Parent Day for the 2008 squad.
