NO. 16 UMD STRIKES AGAIN, SWEEP MARAUDERS 3-0

Friday, October 17, 2008

Different day. Same result. For the second time this season, the No. 16-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team earned a convincing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the University of Mary, by drubbing the Marauders 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-10) Friday night at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D.

The win, was the same result as their previous match with the Marauders back on Sept. 23, as the Bulldogs (17-6 overall; 8-3 NSIC) destroyed Mary (3-20; 1-10) in every aspect of the match, by totaling more kills, assists, digs, blocks and service aces, while recording less errors and a higher hit percentage.

The Bulldogs' vicious attack that killed 38 balls and collected a .307 hit percentage, was again led by junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels, who set team-highs in both kills and digs on the night. The Marshall, Minn. native pounded home 11 kills, while she added nine digs and a block assist to her .471 hit percentage.

Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos also added to the win, as she posted nine kills and three digs to go along with her eye-popping .500 hit percentage, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont recorded seven kills, a .235 hit percentage and a team-high five block assists.

Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff played a key role in setting up the Bulldogs' big hitters, as she assisted on a team-high 37 balls--the second time she has out-set the Marauders this season--while she added a .500 hit percentage, three digs, one kill and a block assist in the victory.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson continued to add to her impressive rookie season by killing four balls, digging three more and assisting on another, while earning the only Bulldog solo block on the night. Fellow freshman middle blocker April Hansen also contributed to the conference win by tallying five kills, four block assists and a dig on Mary's home floor.

Before they head back home, UMD will travel to their second destination on their road trip to the Dakota's, as they are set to clash with Northern State University (13-8; 4-7) in an exciting NSIC match-up Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D.
