LATE GOAL HELPS NORTHERN STATE STUN BULLDOG SOCCER 1-0 ON SUNDAY
Sunday, October 19, 2008
The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team was shocked by Northern State University on Sunday, with the Bulldogs allowing a late goal that proved to be the deciding factor in a 1-0 loss at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
UMD (5-9-2 overall; 5-3-2 NSIC) had come into the match sporting a 7-0-1 lifetime record against its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival. The Wolves improve their record to 9-6-1 overall on the year, upping their conference mark to 5-3-1.
The Bulldogs had momentum on their side through the course of the first half, but were unable to turn any of their seven shots in the period into a legitimate scoring chance.
The score remained deadlocked at 0-0 until Kirbie Wages picked up an errant UMD pass deep in Bulldog territory at the 86:18 mark of the contest. Wages was able to stay onside, side step UMD sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson and direct the ball into the awaiting vacant goal mouth for the eventual game-winner.
Bengtson ended the day with two saves total in her 90 minutes of work. Wolves' goalie Kit Grace made seven stops to gain the victory.
The Bulldogs will next be in action next Friday (Oct. 24) when they welcome NSIC opponent Bemidji State University to Malosky Stadium. The three UMD seniors on the 2008 roster will be honored as part of Senior Night festivities at the game, which is slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
