THIRD TIME'S A CHARM; NO. 18 BULLDOGS SWEEP BEAVERS

Saturday, October 25, 2008

Three matches. Three sweeps.

The University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team has yet to lose a single set to Bemidji State University this fall, as they concluded their season series with their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foes Saturday afternoon, by sweeping the Beavers 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-13) in front of 578 fans at Romano Gymnasium.

With the crowd, players and coaches dressed in their finest pink attire for "Dig for the Cure!," a program developed in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UMD (19-6 overall; 10-3 NSIC) drubbed Bemidji State (6-19; 2-11) in every aspect of the match, as they tallied more kills, assists, digs, blocks and service aces, while they recorded a higher hit percentage and less errors than the visiting Beavers.

As a team, the Bulldogs used a complete team effort that was nearly perfect to defeat Bemidji State within an hour, as they smashed home a total of 46 kills, while they destroyed the previous all-time team hit percentage record of .561set back in 2000, as UMD hit for a .580 percentage on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs were led by senior co-captain Lindsey Clairmont, as the middle blocker collected team-highs in kills, hit percentage and block assists. The Long Lake, Minn. native pounded home ten kills, while she added a pair of block assists and an eye-popping .833 hit percentage in the win.

Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff moved to second on the all-time set assists mark, as the co-captain collected a team-high 40 assists on the afternoon, 20 more than the Beavers had as a team, while she posted a .667 hit percentage, a team-leading three service aces, three digs, a pair of kills and a block assist. Her 5,557 career set assists marks her just 39 away from breaking the all-time Bulldog record held by Julie Bubar since 1993.

Freshman middle blocker April Hansen killed nine balls in the win, as she added a .583 hit percentage, a block assist and a solo block, while sophomore Jamie Lakatos paced UMD with eight kills, a .538 hit percentage and a pair of digs on the afternoon affair.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson continued to play solid, as the Coleraine, Minn. native run up seven kills for a .600 hit percentage, collected a pair of service aces and assisted on a block, while junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels continued to add to her impressive resume, as she bashed seven kills for .545 hit percentage and added a block assist to her nine digs in the conference victory.

Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costumes, as the Bulldogs will back in NSIC action next Friday (Oct. 31), as they are set to tango with No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State (;) on the hardwood of Romano Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.; followed by a clash with Minnesota State-Mankato (;) the next afternoon (Nov.1) at 4:00 p.m. on parents day for UMD.
