GANGELHOFF “SETS” RECORD AS NO. 17 UMD STUNS NO. 3 SMSU WITH 3-0 SWEEP!

Friday, October 31, 2008

On Halloween night, the No. 17-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team played their best match of the season, as they shocked the Romano Gymnasium crowd of 417 fans with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) sweep of third-ranked Southwest Minnesota State University.

In their previous meeting back on Sept. 6, the Bulldogs (20-6 overall; 11-3 NSIC) were swept by the Mustangs (23-4; 12-3), but on this time, the Bulldogs returned the favor as they drubbed SMSU in nearly every category of the match. UMD recorded more kills, assists, digs and blocks, while they racked up a higher hit percentage than the visiting Mustangs.

It wasn’t just any Halloween win for the Bulldogs, it was a record setting holiday as well.

With her match-high 41 set assists on the night, senior setter Katie Gangelhoff became UMD’s all-time career leader in set assists, as she broke the 15-year-old record held by former Bulldog great Julie Bubar from 1990-93. The South St. Paul, Minn. native and UMD co-captain now has 5,598 set assists to her name.

Gangelhoff’s record setting performance put her in the spotlight, but she wasn’t the only Bulldog to contribute to UMD’s pivotal Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win.

Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels collected team-highs in both kills and block assists, as the Marshall, Minn. native pounded home 13 balls for a .375 hit percentage, while she added three block assists and a solo block on the night.

Freshman middle blocker April Hansen paced UMD with ten kills and a team-high .421 hit percentage, while she assisted on a pair of block assists and added a solo block herself.

Fellow freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson continued to impress, as the Coleraine, Minn. big hitter posted eight kills for a .316 hit percentage, while she notched a pair of block assists in the win over SMSU.

Senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont joined the fun as she killed four balls, while assisting on a block as adding a solo block as well. Sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos had seven kills, while in the dig department, junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson led all players with 11 digs, as sophomore outside hitter Rachel Lamers finished with ten.

With the win, the Bulldogs have now racked up four straight conference victories without losing a single set -- 12 in a row -- as they inch even closer to the top of the NSIC.

UMD will be back in conference action tomorrow afternoon, as they play host to familiar colleague, Minnesota State University-Mankato (15-11; 10-5) at 4:00 p.m. on the hardwood of Romano Gymnasium.

Fans are encouraged to attend the match, where afterwards, current Bulldog players and coaches, as well as Champ the Bulldog, will be outside of the gymnasium signing autographs. So please come show your support for UMD and get your favorite Bulldog signatures after the match.
