NO. 17 BULLDOGS STUMBLE AFTER BIG WIN; LOSE TO MAVERICKS 3-1
Saturday, November 1, 2008
After a huge win over third-ranked Southwest Minnesota State, the No. 17-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball squad had big hopes for this afternoon’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match against unranked Minnesota State-Mankato.
Their wishes didn’t come true, as the Bulldogs (20-7 overall; 11-4 NSIC) fell to the Mavericks (16-11; 11-5 NSIC) in a four-set thriller, 3-1 (23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 16-25) in front of 362 fans Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.
In a match that went back-and-fourth between a pair of solid NSIC programs, UMD’s young team made a few uncharacteristic mistakes, such as eight receiving errors, three blocking errors and only hit .289 for the match, where MSU-Mankato was able to take advantage and in the end, win the match.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos, who tallied a season-high 16 kills, to go along with her .382 hit percentage and a solo block in the loss.
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson pounded home 11 kills for a .320 hit percentage, as she dug three balls and assisted on a block, while junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels added 11 kills and 11 digs on the afternoon.
UMD’s all-time career set assists leader, senior setter Katie Gangelhoff, had another stellar performance, as the South St. Paul, Minn. native added a team-high 50 set assists to her record, while she collected a team-leading .500 hit percentage and four service aces, along with her six kills and eight digs.
Freshman middle blocker April Hansen racked up ten kills, as senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont posted seven, while defensively, junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson led all players with 28 digs on the day.
The Bulldogs schedule only gets more difficult, as they are set to travel down to St. Paul, Minn. to tango with the nation’s top program and arch-rival Concordia-St. Paul (27-1; 16-0) on Tuesday (Nov. 4) at 7:00 p.m. from the hardwood of the Gangelhoff Center.
The always entertaining clash between the two rival schools and rematch of the NCAA Regional Championship for the past four years; is scheduled to be broadcasted live on television from FSN North.
