UMD OPENS SEASON WITH A LAST-SECOND 77-75 WIN OVER MONTEVALLO
Friday, November 7, 2008
Every second counts.
That's what University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team learned Friday evening as they knocked of the University of Montevallo (Ala.) 77-75 with just seconds left on the clock.
The opening season win for UMD came in the first round the of the 12th annual Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic, where the Bulldogs (1-0) and Falcons (0-1) went back-and-forth all evening long, as the lead changed 24 times, while both respective squads were knotted up on 12 occasions.
UMD, which shot the lights-out - an impressive 55 percent from the floor and 67 percent from downtown - surprisingly found themselves down a point with just a mere 21 seconds left.
Until the ball fell into Bulldog senior center John Vaudreuil's hands.
The UMD captain, who plugged in 36 of 40 minutes on the floor, sank a jumper with just eight seconds remaining, as he added a free-throw to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
Vaudreuil, who is back this year after being sidelined all of last season with a knee injury, led UMD with 22 points - 14 of which came in the second half - while he grabbed seven rebounds and added a block.
Junior point guard Jordan Schade played stellar as well, as the Oshkosh, Wis. native poured in 12 points, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor, beyond the arc and from the charity stripe, while he added four assists and a steal in the win.
Senior guard Steve Klass also contributed as he collected 11 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point land, as junior forward Brian Sykora snagged a team-high 11 rebounds to go with his eight points on the evening.
Junior forward Ron White helped Sykora on the glass, as he pulled down nine rebounds to add to his eight points, while junior forward Byron Ninham joined the fun by racking up nine points on a 3-of-4 night from the three-point stripe.
The Bulldogs will hope to continue their winning ways, as they are set to lace up their shoes tomorrow in a clash with Lees-McRae College (N.C.) (0-1) at 4:00 p.m. (CST) in the second round of the tournament in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
