REVENGE NEVER TASTED SO GOOD; NO. 17 BULLDOGS ROLL PAST NO. 23 WILDCATS 3-2

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Back on Oct. 3, the No. 17-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball squad traveled down to Wayne, Neb., where they were swept 3-0 by No. 23 Wayne State College.

Friday night, the Bulldogs got revenge.

In a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference battle between a pair of top-25 nationally ranked programs, UMD (21-8 overall; 12-5 NSIC) pulled out all the stops, as they defeated the Wildcats (21-7; 10-6) 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-13) in a thrilling match in front 397 faithful fans at Romano Gymnasium.

In a match that was even all night long, neither team could get in much of a rhythm, as each club seemed nearly identical, scoring points and recording side outs back-and-fourth.

The Bulldogs came out of the gates very quick, as they set Wayne State down in the first set. However, the Wildcats bounced back to take the next two, until UMD flexed their muscle to win the final pair of sets for the victory.

The leadership it took for the Bulldogs to come back after being down 2-1 was guided by their captains.

Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels led the attack as she pounded home a match-leading 16 kills, while adding 10 digs and four total blocks on the night.

Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff controlled the middle of the floor as she set-up the UMD big hitters a match-high 52 times, while recording a match-leading .444 hit percentage to go along with her 16 digs and four kills.

Senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont controlled the front net as she killed eight balls, while posting a remarkable match-high 10 total blocks; nearly as many as the entire Wayne Sate front line.

Freshman middle blocker April Hansen added to the fun as the Brooten, Minn. native racked up 14 kills, as well as six block assists, while sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos piled on ten kills and a block assist in the conference win.

In the dig department, junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson dug a match-high 27 balls, while sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen gathered 15 digs on the night.

In sending the taste of defeat back to the Wildcats, UMD amassed an amazing 88 digs, 59 kills and 14 blocks against their conference foes.

Tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 8) marks senior day for the Bulldogs, as well as round two of the revenge weekend for UMD.

On a day for the seniors, the Bulldogs look to make up for a 3-1 loss to No. 21-ranked Augustana College (S.D.) (20-9; 12-4) back on Oct. 4, as they are set for an NSIC engagement at 4:00 p.m. from hardwood the of Romano Gymnasium.
