NO. 17 BULLDOGS LOOK LIKE WELL-OILED MACHINE; SINK UPPER IOWA 3-1
Friday, November 14, 2008
Head volleyball coach Jim Boos didn't choose Katie Gangelhoff, Lindsey Clairmont and Sarah Wyffels as his captains for no reason; he knew they had leadership.
And that's exactly what they showed Friday night.
Behind their generals, UMD knocked off Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Upper Iowa 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16) in front of 200 fans at the Dorman Gym in Fayette, Iowa.
In the win, the Bulldogs (23-8 overall; 14-5 NSIC) put Upper Iowa away as they racked up more kills, digs and assists, while they collected a higher hit percentage and recorded less errors than the host Peacocks.
Clairmont was the head of the attack for UMD, as the senior middle blocker piled up team-highs in kills, hit percentage and blocks. The Long Lake, Minn. native pounded home 12 kills for a .429 hit percentage, while she assisted on four blocks in the Bulldog victory.
Wyffels set the tone as well, as the junior middle blocker also tallied 12 kills on the evening, while she posted a .385 hit percentage, added a team-leading 18 digs and assisted on a block in the contest.
Gangelhoff set up the Bulldog big-hitter as usual, by recording 45 set assists; eight more than Upper could gather as a team. The senior setter and South St. Paul native also recorded a .375 hit percentage, 10 digs, four kills and a pair of blocks on the evening.
Freshman middle blocker April Hansen continued to add to her impressive first-year totals as she gathered 10 kills for a .421 hit percentage and two block assists, as sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos assembled 12 kills for a .296 hit percentage and a couple of block assists in the road win.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Kuffel also contributed on the night as she dispatched eight kills for a .375 hit percentage, while junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson ranked second among Bulldogs with 17 digs.
With the NCAA II playoffs just less than a week away, UMD hopes to add to their current three-game winning streak, as they close our their regular season schedule tomorrow at Winona State (12-6; 10-9) at 3:00 p.m.
