NO. 17 BULLDOGS FINISH REGULAR SEASON ON HIGH NOTE; OVERPOWER WINONA ST. 3-1
Saturday, November 15, 2008
It's not easy to end a regular season on a four-game winning streak, including a pair of road victories, as well as two wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
But that's exactly what the volleyball Bulldogs did.
Saturday afternoon, UMD (24-8 overall; 15-5 NSIC) used a complete team attack to roll past Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference colleague Winona State, as they tallied more kills, digs and assists, while they recorded a higher hit percentage than host Warriors (12-17; 10-10).
To say junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels was an all-around player Saturday would be putting it lightly.
The Mashall, Minn. native and UMD captain played stellar on both the offensive and defensive side of the net, as the all-conference pick pounded home a team-high 18 kills for a .333 hit percentage, while she racked up a team-leading 17 digs in the win.
Freshman middle blocker April Hansen maintained the net as well, as the Brooten, Minn. native and all-conference honorable mention piled up 10 kills for a .212 hit percentage, while she added four digs and assisted on a block on the afternoon affair.
Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff, an all-conference member, continued to set up the Bulldog attackers, as the captain scored a team-high 43 assists to her teammates, while she gathered .500 hit percentage, 16 digs and five kills in the victory.
Also adding to the fun was all-conference honorable mention Lindsey Clairmont, who dispatched eight kills and a team-leading five block assists, while sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos ended the afternoon with eight kills, four digs and a block assist.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Kuffel added an impressive 12 kills, three block assists, and produced the only solo block of the contest, while freshman defensive specialist Allison Fanta acquired 10 digs in the regular season finale.
But the winning streak doesn't stop here.
Now, its national tournament time.
The Bulldogs, who are currently ranked fourth - out of eight teams - in the Central Region, will now compete in the NCAA II Tournament.
The 64-team tournament will kick off with regional play next Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 20-22) at the host venue of the highest Central Regional seed.
