WARRIORS SHOOT PAST BULLDOGS 79-51
Saturday, December 13, 2008
The Winona State University men’s basketball team is currently the defending Division II National Champions and have been to two of the past three title games.
And Saturday night, they showed exactly why.
The Warriors knocked off the Bulldogs 79-51 in a thrilling Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference clash before 556 rowdy fans at Romano Gymnasium.
The Warriors (6-4 overall; 2-2 NSIC) used their high-powered and fast-paced offense, which was red-hot, to blow away UMD (8-4; 3-1) by shooting an eye-popping 64 percent from behind the arc and a jaw-dropping 57 percent from the floor.
The game started off back-and-fourth, as the Bulldogs found themselves within just three points, trailing 16-13 roughly halfway through the first frame.
But that’s as close as they would get to the defending champs.
Winona State put on a shooting clinic, as they tallied an amazing 53 percent from downtown and 52 percent from the field, leading them to a 41-25 advantage over UMD at the break.
The Bulldogs shot well early on, as they racked up a 40 percent three-point percentage and a 35 percent field-goal mark; but UMD couldn’t keep up with the Warriors by the time they hit the locker room.
After the 10-minute rest, it didn’t get any easier for the host Bulldogs.
Winona State continued to shoot out of the gym, as they hit six of their seven – an outstanding 86 percent – three pointers in the second half, en route to totaling 14 long-range bombs on the night.
UMD – who had their four-game winning-streak and undefeated NSIC mark snapped – shot a dismal 22 percent from downtown in the second half.
The Bulldogs at one point, who were also out-rebounded and committed more turnovers than the Warriors, found themselves trailing by as many as 36 points with just six minutes left on the clock.
UMD was guided by senior center John Vaudreuil, who led all players in both scoring and rebounding, as the captain piled up 15 rebounds and ripped down nine boards. The Bloomington, Minn. native also shot an impressive 55 percent from the field in the conference loss.
Freshman point guard Ryan Rasmussen had a solid night as well, as the native of Waupun, Wis. poured in nine points, while he added an assist, snagged a rebound and nabbed a steal for the Bulldogs.
Junior forward Brian Sykora played stellar as he totaled eight points, five rebounds and a pair of helpers on the evening. The captain also added a block and a steal to his record, while he drained both of his shots from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Ron White also dispatched six points and three rebounds, while the Chicago, Ill. native dished out a pair of assists in the tough loss.
UMD will now hit the gym for practice this week, before they head off to Vermillion, S.D., when they will hit the hardwood with former North Central Conference rival South Dakota on Friday (Dec. 19) at 7:00 p.m.
