GOLDEN EAGLES NO MATCH FOR BULLDOGS; UMD CRUISES 65-39
Saturday, February 14, 2009
Last December on the road, the University of Minnesota Duluth knocked down a jumper in the final seconds to tip the University of Minnesota-Crookston 58-56 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference thriller.
But roughly two months later on Friday night, the Bulldogs made sure they didn't need the final seconds to get past the Golden Eagles.
The conference clash saw UMD use their hard-nosed defense and solid ball control to lay a 65-39 drubbing on UMC before a rowdy house of 760 fans at Romano Gymnasium.
The host Bulldogs (16-10 overall; 10-6 NSIC) came out of the gates quick, as they jumped to early 13-6 lead and forced the Golden Eagles (4-19; 2-14) to take their first timeout. After the short break, UMD kept their attack on, as they rolled to 31-22 advantage when the teams headed to the locker rooms.
After the intermission, both clubs played even until about midway through the frame, when the Bulldogs racked up 11 straight points to run off to a 54-34 lead and ease their way to the conference victory.
UMD, who now sits seventh in the latest NSIC standings, committed just two turnovers compared to the visiting Golden Eagles' 14, while the Bulldogs out-rebounded UMC on the glass 35-30 in the win.
Junior forward Brian Sykora guided UMD, as the captain poured in a game-leading 14 points, as well as a game-high eight rebounds. The Bloomington, Minn. native also shot an impressive 64 percent (7-for-11) from the field, recorded a team-leading three assists and two steals in his game-high 29 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs were also paced by senior center John Vaudreuil, as the captain posted a solid 12 points and five boards for the Maroon and Gold, while fellow senior guard and captain Steve Klass drained a game-leading three shots from downtown en route to tallying 11 points on the evening.
After the final buzzer, UMD, who recorded more steals and assists than the Golden Eagles, also outshot UMC in every phase of the game, as they nailed 73 percent (11-for-15) of their attempts from the charity stripe, 43 percent (24-for-56) of their shots from the floor and a solid 38 percent (6-for-16) of their heaves from behind the arc.
The Bulldogs look to stick to their winning ways tomorrow night (Sat., Feb. 14), as they welcome in Minnesota State-Moorhead, a club they blew out 68-48 last December. The opening tip from Romano Gymnasium is set for 8 o'clock.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink tomorrow evening to support breast cancer awareness and research and will receive $1.00 off on ticket prices for participating. UMD will also be selling "Think Pink" t-shirts for $10.00. The event is sponsored by the National Bank of Commerce and all proceeds will be donated to St. Luke's Breast Center.
Bring out your best pink and come support the Bulldogs and breast cancer awareness!
