SOLID SECOND GAME PERFORMANCE EARNS UMD A SPLIT VERSUS MISSOURI SOUTHERN
Monday, February 23, 2009
The University of Minnesota Duluth broke its losing spell against Missouri Southern State University, splitting a non-conference twin bill on Monday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium. The Bulldogs dropped the opening game 8-2, before winning the night cap 7-4 in Joplin, Mo.
After being swept in yesterday's doubleheader, UMD entered the day 0-4 in the lifetime contests between the two schools. In game one, the Lions' bats made sure it would be 0-5.
Missouri Southern never trailed as it scored the game's first five runs - plating a total of six runners in their last three tries at the dish - to cruise to an easy victory.
The Bulldogs could muster just three hits in the opener, and scored both their runs in the sixth inning. Junior outfielders Bryan Denisen and Will Dahlgren each laced doubles, while freshman second baseman Orry Engebretsen tallied a single in the opener.
Zach Caldwell and Trent Owens led the Lions at the plate, each driving in two runs, with Jacob Taylor ending the game with three hits.
Sophomore right hander Josh Foreman took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings. CJ Maffei pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out six visitors and walking one, while earning the win.
UMD was able to respond in the nightcap, exploding for seven runs off of nine hits, getting their first win against the Lions in its sixth try.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first two at-bats, thanks in large part to doubles by sophomore first baseman Josh Threlkeld and Engebretsen.
Missouri Southern responded by scoring four runs over the next two innings, bringing the score to 5-4 after four full frames.
UMD padded its lead over the final three innings, as a result of two solo big flies by Threlkeld and senior co-captain David Olson.
A smattering of Bulldog pitchers came together to earn the victory, with freshman righty Mark Shaver picking up the pitching win. Sophomore Josh Taran pitched the final two frames, allowing just one hit, to earn the save. Garrett Groom was saddled with the loss for MSSU.
Threlkeld and Engebretsen each went 2-for-3 at the plate, both crossing the plate once, to go along with their respective two runs batted in. Shaver allowed just three hits in his two innings of work on the bump.
UMD is off until next Thursday, March 5, when it travels back to Minneapolis, Minn., and the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Bulldogs will finish off the five games it has scheduled in the climate controlled confines in 2009 with a non-conference double header against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Augustana (S.D.) College. Game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
