UMD WOMEN REIGN SUPREME AT NSIC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, MEN PLACE SECOND
Saturday, May 9, 2009
Prior to parting ways with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2004-05, the University of Minnesota Duluth strung together a dominating outdoor track and field run by winning 11 straight NSIC women's team titles.
The Bulldogs, who returned to the NSIC this fall after a four-year stay in the now-defunct North Central Conference, kept that streak alive Saturday by placing first at the league championships in Wayne, Neb. while their male counterparts finished second at the two-day event. The UMD women produced individual champions in four different events including the 800-meter run (senior Liz Palkie in an NSIC record time of 2:10.6), the 1,500-meter run (Palkie in 4:44.61), the 10,000-meter run (freshman Morgan Place in 37:15.24, another new conference mark) and the long jump (senior Traci Pottinger with a leap of 18'-09.75") in addition to claiming the 4 x 400 meter relay crown where the senior quartet of Palkie, Kristen Haak, Taylor Hartje and Alyssa Wendt posted a 3:51.87 finish. Wendt (third in the 400-meters), sophomore Carolyn Wardell (second in the 1,500), senior Ally Hartje (third in the triple jump) and senior Maria Swanson (second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw) also turned in strong performances over the weekend. UMD compiled a team scored of 156 while Minnesota State University-Mankato was next with 132.5 points in the 11-school women's competition.
MSU-Mankato (193 points) and UMD (98) traded places in the final men's standings. Senior Chris Parno, the runnerup at last month's NSIC decathlon championships, clocked in at 54.53 in the 400-meter hurdles en route to capturing the Bulldogs' lone individual title. Sophomore Brian Ott (400 meters), a Duluth East High School alum and sophomore Dan Larson (javelin), a graduate of nearby Proctor High School, both took second while junior Seth Urtel (110-meter hurdles), Forrest Randall (400-meter hurdles) and Ben Martinson (hammer throw) each placed third. The Bulldogs were NSIC outdoor team champions from 1993-2000 and 2002-04.
The conference coaches paid tribute to select members of the Bulldog team and staff, naming Palkie the NSIC Women's Track Athlete of the Year, Place the NSIC Women's Newcomer of the Year and head coach John Fulkrod the NSIC Women's Coach of the Year.
