Senior co-captain Clare Dahmen scored the opening goal and the game-winner in leading the No. 24 University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Wayne State College 5-1, on Friday evening at James S. Malosky Stadium.

The Bulldogs move into sole possession of first place in the league standings, for now (previous league leader Winona State University was idle on Friday night) upped their overall record to 12-2-2 and 10-1-1 in NSIC. UMD dominated the time of possession battle on the night, made apparent by the Bulldogs' 34-3 advantage in the total shots column. The Wildcats finished the game with just one shot on net, accounted for in their lone goal of the match.

Scoring was initiated by Dahmen in the 18th minute, when the forward/midfielder slipped a shot past the WSU goalkeeper, Emily Walker, from just in front of the net. Junior midfielder Molly Nepote delivered a perfect feed to set up the goal; junior forward Brittany Brown was also credited with an assist on the strike.

Dahmen potted the eventual game-winning score at the 30:26 mark. She handled a cross from junior forward Becky Anderson, found space and rifled a shot that trickled through Walker's outstretched hands. Brown notched her second assist of the night on Dahmen's ninth goal of the year, and 19th of her UMD career.

With the goal, Dahmen moves into sole possession of ninth place on the school's career goals-scored charts. In adding four points on the evening, she is now also alone in ninth place for career points scored (54).   The Hopkins, Minn., native trails Erika Ludwig (1994-96) by two goals and one point, respectively, in each of the career statistical rankings.

At 37:38, UMD sophomore defender Reegan Lloyd was whistled for a foul in her own goalie box resulting in a Wildcat penalty kick. WSC midfielder Valerie Robinson converted on the try, beating Maroon and Gold netminder Hannah Bengtson to bring the score to 2-1 - where the score would stand as the two squads headed into halftime.

The Bulldogs' added an insurance strike in the 59th minute, with Anderson's spin-and-shoot goal from inside 10 yards of the visitor net. Senior forward Alex Paffrath was credited with the assist, her team-leading eighth helper of the season.

Freshman forward Leah Kramer netted her second and third goals of the year within a span of three minutes (77:11 and 80:18, respectively) to round out the hosts' scoring for the evening. Lloyd earned her first assist in 2009 on the first tally with freshman midfielder/defender Ashley Brown helping on the second.

Bengtson ended the night not needing to make a single save to earn the victory; freshman goalie Hanna Iaizzo saw action in net for 10:43, in relieving the starter from Lino Lakes, Minn. Walker finished the night making 15 saves in all for the Wildcats. All 21 available UMD players made an appearance in the match.

The Bulldogs will finish off their 2009 regular season schedule this Sunday (Nov. 1) when they welcome NSIC foe Augustana College to town. The Vikings, who are 7-7-5 overall and 4-4-4 in conference play, will enter the game in a fight for the eighth and final NSIC tournament spot. Game time on Sunday afternoon is set for 1:00 p.m.
