In the 88th minute, junior Molly Nepote delivered a tie-breaking strike to give the No. 2-seeded University of Minnesota Duluth a 1-0 victory against the No. 7-seeded Northern State University in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament, Wednesday night.

The win at James S. Malosky Stadium secures a spot for the Bulldogs in the semi-final round of the tournament, which will be hosted by Winona State University this Friday and Sunday (Nov. 6 & 8).

Nepote, a 2009 UMD (14-2-2 overall; 11-2-2 NSIC) newcomer, netted the winning goal after a corner kick placed by fellow junior forward Whitney Wilson deflected off of an NSU (7-8-6 overall; 5-5-4 NSIC) defender in front of the visitor net. The forward/midfielder gained possession and quickly booted a shot from 20 yards out, hitting the crossbar before finding the back of the net. This is the Mendota Heights, Minn., native’s first goal as a member of the Bulldog squad.

UMD had the upper hand offensively throughout the entire match, made apparent by their 27-2 advantage in the shot column. The Wolves’ goalkeeper, Dee Wood, held her own with ten saves compared to UMD netminder Hannah Bengtson’s two saves. With this win, Bengtson achieved her 11th shutout of the year, and number 17 for her Bulldog career.

It’s been exactly six years since UMD have had a win in a postseason conference tournament, with their last victory coming against Concordia University, St. Paul by a score of 5-0 (11/4/03).

The Bulldogs play St. Cloud State -- who won a dramatic first round match via penalty kicks, against Bemidji State University -- in the semi-final round of the NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament Friday Nov. 6, in Winona, Minn., at Maxwell Field at Verizon Wireless Stadium. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m.
