UMD'S ODIM AMONG 24 CANDIDATES FOR 2009 HARLON HILL TROPHY
Friday, November 6, 2009
Isaac Odim, who has, in a relatively short period of time, cemented a place for himself alongside the University of Minnesota Duluth ball-carrying greats, is one of 24 candidates in the running for the 2009 Harlon Hill Trophy as the NCAA Division II Football Player of the Year.
Odim, 6-0, 215-pound junior running back from Rochester, Minn., becomes the fifth Harlon Hill Trophy candidate from UMD, joining quarterback Ted Schlafke (the fourth-leading vote getter in 2008), wide receivers Greg Aker (2006) and Tim Battaglia (2003) and the late Corey Veech, a halfback who was selected in the award's inaugural year (1986).
Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 148 NCAA II football-playing institutions. The 24 initial candidates will be placed on regional ballots and the top two players from each of the four NCAA regions will advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Nov. 13. Schlafke is the only Bulldog to ever appear on a national ballot.
A 2008 Football Gazette All-American and All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team pick, Odim currently ranks second among NCAA Division II players in scoring (15.6 points per game), third in rushing (151.1 ypg) and fourth in all-purpose yardage (194.8 ypg) while eclipsing the 100-yard ground barrier in all 10 games this season -- a UMD record. Odim, who has scored more points (336) and more touchdowns (56) than anyone in the 77-year history of Bulldog football, transferred to UMD from Rochester Community and Technical College last fall and proceeded to set team marks for rushing (1,638 yards), scoring (180 points), rushing touchdowns (26) and total touchdowns (30). He now needs just 80 more yards to become the Bulldogs' all-time leading ground gainer, having rushed for 3,149 yards on 424 carries for a school-record 7.4 per run average.
During his two seasons with the Bulldogs, Odim has helped lead the Bulldogs to their first-ever NCAA II national championship, a 24-1 overall record (the best current two-year mark of any NCAA Ii school) and at least one Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title.
Besides Odim, the 2009 Harlon Hill Trophy qualifiers from Super Regional 3 include senior running back Joique Bell of Wayne State (Mich.) University, senior quarterback Billy Cundiff of Ashland University, senior quarterback Brad Iciek of Grand Valley State University, senior wide receiver Logan Masters of Wayne State (Neb.) College and senior quarterback David Pesek of the Colorado School of Mines.
