BULLDOG SOCCER OFF TO NSIC CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 2-1 WIN OVER ST. CLOUD STATE

Friday, November 6, 2009

It has taken six years for the University of Minnesota Duluth women's soccer team to get back into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament Finals, but for the Bulldogs, there is no time like the present.

Goals from a pair of juniors propelled the UMD squad to a 2-1 victory over St. Cloud State University in the semifinal round of the NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament Friday afternoon, handing the Bulldogs their 15th win of the season.  The win ties the Bulldogs for the most wins in a season, and improves UMD's record to 15-2-2 overall.

UMD struck first at Maxwell Field, in Winona, Minn. in the 30th minute, thanks to junior defender Maria Leider's first goal of the 2009 season. Sophomore defender Reegan Lloyd directed a free kick off of a SCSU foul towards the Husky net, where Duluth native Leider found the angle past goaltender Molly Bender.  The goal was Leider's first of the season and gives Lloyd her second assist of the year.

The Bulldogs added the eventual game-winner a mere five minutes into the second-half when junior forward Brittany Brown parted a crowd in front of the net to head in a cross from the left of the Husky net from Alex Paffrath.  Brown's second tally of the season gives Paffrath her team-leading ninth helper, and senior forward Clare Dahmen's pass to Paffrath gave her assist No. 4 of the year for her Bulldog-best 24th point this fall.

The Huskies responded almost immediately just 31 seconds later, on a goal from freshman Margie Jancik, but the Bulldogs held on to stay unbeaten against St. Cloud this season in going 2-0-1.  SCSU outshot UMD 15-13, but the Bulldogs got 10 saves from NSIC Defensive Player of the Year Hannah Bengtson.

UMD will play host Winona State University in the tournament championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. The appearance in the NSIC finals will be the program's seventh, and first since the 2003 squad took home the crown.

BULLDOG NOTES: The 15 wins on the year for the Bulldogs are tied for second-most in a single season, with the 2001 (15-4-1) and 2002 (15-5-2) squads matching the same victory mark. The 2000 UMD team owns the record for most wins in school history with 17 (17-2-2).

-The opening score represented the 16th time that UMD has potted the initial strike in 2009 - the Bulldogs are now 15-0-1 in those games.
