Point taken.

There were no mixed messages sent out this time from the University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey team Sunday afternoon against Minnesota State University, Mankato.  The No. 5 Bulldogs responded to Saturday’s stunning late game loss by dominating the Mavericks in a 7-1 statement, and an offensive statement at that.

UMD scored four second-period goals to blow open the Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, netting a season-high seven goals in the process.  The win improves the Bulldogs’ all-time record against the Mavericks to 36-3-3.

“Everybody showed up and played all 60 minutes,” said head coach Shannon Miller after her 36th career win over the Mavericks.  “We played a very complete game offensively and defensively and we showed what we are capable of.  We had a lot of fun tonight and that was just a huge win.”

Ida Clark put the Mavericks on the board first, knocking in a loose puck through traffic 11:04 into the first period.  But just 3:26 later, senior defenseman Sarah Murray’s blast off a won Katie Wilson face-off knotted the game up at 1-1, and the score would stay that way into the first intermission.

It took just 2:35 into the second period for the Bulldogs to topple that tie, however.  UMD scored three power-plays goals in just over three minutes of play, with two goals from senior blueliner Jaime Rasmussen and one from Emmanuelle Blais to bolster the Bulldogs lead to 4-1 a mere 5:53 into the second stanza.  Rookie forward Vanessa Thibault tacked on an even strength score at 16:13 to extend UMD’s lead to 5-1, and after the second period of play, the offensive route was officially on.

Blais struck for a short-handed breakaway goal eight minutes into the final stanza, and just :22 seconds later– a Bulldog record for fastest back-to-back short-handed tallies --  rookie forward Audrey Cournoyer, who had been a spark-plug all afternoon, connected on her third tally of the season at 8:29.  The goal gave UMD a 7-1 advantage, and the most goals the Bulldogs have scored since they put seven on the board last season against North Dakota on Feb, 27, 2009 in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs.

Netminder Jennifer Harss turned away 22 scoring chances for the Mavericks, while sophomore Lana Steck made three saves in relief.    UMD outshot MSU 36-26, and was a season-best 3-of-6 on the power-play, while holding the Mavericks scoreless on their four extra skater attempts.

The Bulldogs, who improve to 10-6-0 overall and 7-5-0 in the WCHA, will head east next weekend to take on Boston College in Boston, Mass.  Game-time for Friday’s contest will get underway 12:00pm.
