NO. 5 UMD BLANKS BOSTON COLLEGE 3-0 FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Friday, November 27, 2009
The No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team picked up it's third shutout of the season Friday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass., as the Bulldogs defeated Boston College 3-0 in the confines of the Conte Forum (Kelley Rink).
The Bulldogs improve to 11-6-0 overall, and 2-0 all-time against the Eagles, who they have faced just one other time in program history. UMD and BC met in the semifinal game of the 2007 NCAA Frozen Four -- arguably one of the Bulldogs' top-three moments in program history -- a 4-3 double-overtime triumph for UMD. Four players on the Bulldogs' current roster (Saara Tuominen, Emmanuelle Blais, Jaime Rasmussen and Sarah Murray) were members of that squad.
UMD scored a goal in each period of the contest, with the first tally of the game coming a mere :52 into action. Rookie Katie Wilson netted her sixth goal of the season off a rebound and ensuing scramble in front of BC's net. Wilson's tally was her 17th points of the season (6g, 11a), and ranks her third in the NCAA among fellow rookies with a 1.00 points per game average.
Wilson wouldn't be the only freshman to find the twine, however. Audrey Cournoyer rung up a breakaway goal when she was sprung by senior forward Tuominen at the 16:14 mark of the second period. It marks the fourth-straight game Cournoyer has found the score sheet, an impressive run that marks the longest scoring streak of the rookie's career.
Making her first appearance since the Ohio State series two weeks ago, junior forward Laura Fridfinnson capped off the Bulldogs' scoring with just 1:51 remaining in the game. The goal, which gives Fridfinnson the 96th point of her career, as well her 50th goal, also extends her current scoring streak to four skates.
UMD netminder Jennifer Harss earned her third clean-sheet of the season, turning away 22 Boston College scoring chances. UMD outshot the Eagles 26-22, and was 1-of-3 on its rapidly improving power-play.
The two squads will square off again tomorrow to finish off the non conference series. Game-time is slated for 1:00 p.m. EDT.
