As the second week of preseason gets underway, the University of Minnesota Duluth will take to the pitch with heavy hearts following the passing of Margaret 'Peg' Cane, mother of Bulldog head coach Greg Cane. Margaret Cane, 84, of Duluth, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, in St. Luke’s hospital with her family by her side.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1927, in Brainerd, Minn., to Ben and Agnes (Peck) Anderson. She married Melvin Cane on April 18, 1953, in Pequot Lakes, Minn.

Margaret was well known as the No. 1 fan of UMD women’s soccer, and never missed the chance to attend her grandchildren’s sporting events. She opened her heart and home to all, including many international students.

"It's very difficult losing a parent," coach Cane said. "She was a fixture in the stands behind the bench at just about every Bulldog game I coached over 18 years."

Visitation will take place Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in the Dougherty Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A visitation will be held one hour before the funeral the day of the Mass.
