BULLDOGS BOUNCE WHITECAPS IN EXHIBITION 5-3
Friday, September 28, 2012
The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team literally had more goaltenders dress Friday night than they did defensemen, but the Bulldogs used a balanced offense to offset their smaller roster.
UMD skated past the Minnesota Whitecaps 5-3 in its first game of a two-game exhibition series at AMSOIL Arena, despite missing three blueliners (Jessica Wong, Brigette Lacquette and Tea Villila). The Bulldogs skated just four defensemen in all and converted both rookie forward Hannah Bramm and sophomore forward Shara Jasper to the backline.
Senior winger Audrey Cournoyer scored two goals for UMD, inlcuding the first tally of the game 11:34 into the first period. Pernilla Winberg added a second goal just over four minutes later, and the Bulldogs rolled offensively from there. Two freshman -- Alivia Del Basso and Bramm added scores in the second stanza to help secure UMD's lead for good.
Five players tallied two points in the skate, including Winberg (1g, 1a) and Katie Wilson and Zoe Hickel, who each had two helpers on the night. The Bulldogs wemt 1-of-6 on the power play and held the Whitecaps scoreless on four attempts with an extra skater.
Two freshmen goaltenders split action for UMD, with Kayla Black making 12 saves and allowing no goals in 30:13 and Sofia Carlstrom turned away 11 pucks in 29:47.
Both teams will hit the ice again tomorrow afternoon, with the puck set to drop at 3:07 p.m.
