BULLDOGS SLOTTED 7TH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Coaches around the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference have spoken, and they see the University of Minnesota Duluth as a top half team in the league, voting the Bulldogs to finish seventh in the annual preseason poll, released Thursday. The Bulldogs went 14-13 overall and 11-11 in the NSIC a year ago for a seventh place finish, bowing out in the first round of the NSIC Tournament.

Now featuring 16 teams with the additions of Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls, the NSIC will introduce a division system this winter. UMD received the fourth highest total (34 points) among teams in the North Division. Winona State sat atop the poll with 219 points on the legs of 10 first-place votes.

Reigning NSIC Coach of the Year Matt Bowen takes over at the helm for UMD, which played under Gary Holquist (now the director of development for Bulldog athletics) for the past 14 seasons. Bowen led Bemidji State University to an overall record of 22-9 and a league mark of 16-6 en route to a conference title in 2011-12.

UMD opens the season Nov. 17 against the University of Wisonsin Superior at Romano Gymnasium.
