ANNUAL BIG JIG FISHING CONTEST SET FOR THIS SUNDAY AT PIKE LAKE

Monday, February 4, 2013

This Sunday (Feb. 10), scores of anglers young and old will once again converge on Pike Lake near Duluth for the University of Minnesota Duluth Athletic Department's 13th annual Big Jig Fishing Contest. The event runs from 12 noon to 3 p.m. and is limited to the first 3,000 entrants. Subway has served as the title sponsor of the Big Jig since its debut in 2000 while Yamaha and RJ Sport and Cycle are supporting sponsors.

The 2013 Big Jig event includes over $50,000 worth of prizes  for the top 100 catches. The list includes a  2013 Yamaha Rhino 4 x 4 (1st Prize), a three-day trip with Voyagaire Houseboats (2nd prize), a Yamaha F20 four-stroke outboard motor (3rd Prize), a 2013 EF2000I Inverter Generator (50th prize) and $1,000 in cash (100th largest fish). In addition, each entrant's name will be placed in a raffle for nearly $500 in prizes, including a new Yamaha Grizzly 4 x 4 ATV. Raffle tickets for those not participating in the event, can be purchased for $5.00 each.

At last year's Big Jig, Mike Kroening reeled in the biggest fish of the day, a 2.250-pound sucker, and, in the process, took home a 2012 Kymco Side By Side.

Proceeds from the Big Jig support the UMD athletic scholarship fund. Registration is $35 in advance and $40 the day of the event with a maximum of 2 lines per contestant.  The Big Jig is limited to the first 3,000 entrants and entry forms are available on-line at:  www.umdbulldogs.com or call 218-788-2544

UMD coaches and student-athletes are all volunteers as the event staff the day of the Big Jig, which has raised approximately  $50,000 annually athletic scholarships each year.
