Rematch games have been a proverbial thorn in the side of the University of Minnesota Duluth for the better part of the 2012-13 season and the Bulldogs could not turn that trend around Saturday night. Colorado College broke free from a 1-1 tie in the second period and finished with four unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory over UMD Saturday night at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The loss, the Bulldogs' first to Colorado College in five meetings,  snapped UMD's five-game WCHA winning streak.

Both teams generated chances and had man-advantage opportunities in an exciting first period that ended in a 1-1 tie. Following a Tiger power play tally (just the second such goal scored against UMD in Matt McNeely’s last 10 starts) the Bulldogs broke even on a fortuitous bounce when senior left winger Keegan Flaherty fed a centering pass to the slot and it deflected off a Tiger defender and into the net.

Despite stretching its lead in the shots on goal department, UMD could make nothing of it on the scoreboard in the second period. Colorado College went ahead 3-1 on even strength markers 6:09 apart – with goals at the 5:01 and 11:10 marks – and took that same lead into the third frame. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to just five shots on goal in the final period, but Colorado College made those opportunities count in adding a pair of insurance markers to conclude the scoring and snap UMD’s three-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs (10-11-3 overall and 8-7-3 in the WCHA) racked up 41 shots on Colorado College goaltender Joe Howe, who finished with 40 saves. McNeely turned aside 22 shots in making his 16th start this winter. UMD, which picked up a 3-2 victory over the Tigers on Friday night, is now 2-7-2 in rematch games and 2-5-1 when looking for a weekend sweep.

Up next for the Bulldogs is a brief respite from WCHA warfare as UMD will take on the U.S. National Under-18 team in an exhibition matchup next Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
