TOEPFER, URBAN AND MILLER CLAIM FIRSTS AT SUPER 8 INVITATIONAL

Junior Cole Toepfer won a pair of events while sophomores Scott Urban and Chanel Miler each captured one individual title for the University of Minnesota Duluth at the 24th annual Super 8 Open Saturday in Bemidji, Minn.
Toepfer, a team captain from Eagan, Minn., finished first in the mile with a time of 4:27.36 and the 1,000-meter run (2:38.55). Urban captured the 800-meter crown, clocking in at 2:00.27, just ahead of teammate and runnerup Tyler Stevens (2:01.00).
Miller, the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Track Athlete of the Week, turned in a superb performance in the pentathlon, winning that event with a school-record point total of 3,459. That NCAA II provisional qualifying-effort easily eclipsed the previous mark of 3,288 points set by Ally Hartje in 2009. It also ranks fifth currently among all NCAA II competitors in the the natin.
Other highlights for the Bulldog women at the Super 8 Open included sophomore Kara Thul in the 5,000-meter run (second place with a career-best time of 19:44.7), junior Kelsi Ring in the 60-meter hurdles (second place; 8.99), senior Kirsten Bjork in the women's 400 meters (second place; 1:00.83) and sophomore Amelia Maher in both the high jump (second place; 1.57 meters) and 600-meter run (second place; 1:41.18)
Up next for the Bulldog men is the University of St. Thomas Showcase on Friday (Jan. 25) in St. Paul and while the women will participate in the Minnesota State University-Mankato Open on that same day as well as Saturday.
