ROOTH WILL BE INDUCTED INTO THE IIHF'S 2015 HALL OF FAME CLASS

Former Bulldog All-American and four-time Olympian Maria Rooth owns one of the most storied careers in all of women's hockey, and apparently the International Ice Hockey Federation agrees.

Rooth will be one of four former hockey players inducted into the IIHF's 2015 Hall of Fame class, along with former NHL and Olympians goaltender Dominik Hasek, Canadian defenseman Scott Niedermayer, Czech hockey legend Robert Reichel.

A two-time All-American (2001-02, 2000-01) for the University of Minnesota Duluth, Rooth still ranks second in career points (232 in 124 games), first in goals (119) and fifth in assists (113).  Those staggering numbers helped the Bulldogs win three-consecutive NCAA championships (2001-2003), a feat to that this day that has not been repeated in NCAA Division I women's hockey.  Rooth also captained UMD during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.

Despite playing in four-straight Olympics with Sweden (2010, 2006, 2002, 1998) and earning both a silver (2006) and bronze medal (2002), Rooth is no doubt enshrined in Olympic hockey folklore because of her heroics in the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.  Playing the United States in a game that the U.S. was heavily favored to win, Rooth scored twice to send the game into overtime at 2-2.  After a scoreless overtime, Rooth scored the winning goal in the penalty-shot shootout to send Sweden into the gold medal game.

Rooth spent one season with UMD as an assistant coach in 2010-11 before returning to home to Sweden.
