UMD LEADS THE PACK AFTER OPENING DAY OF NSIC INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chanel Miller sprints to the finish line during the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries Friday on the campus of Bemidji State University
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Track and Field Championships concluded its first day of competition Friday in Bemidji, Minn.  with the University of Minnesota Duluth occupying the top spot in the team standings after six events. The Bulldogs had 55 points -- 17 more than runnerup Augustana College -- while the defending champion University of Mary (31), Wayne State College (30) and Winona State University (19) were next.

Among the point getters for the Bulldogs Friday were junior Amelia Maher, who tied for second in the high jump (an event she won last year) with a leap of 1.67 meters, and fellow junior Chanel Miller, who took third in the long jump (5.58 meters). That tandem placed 1-2 in the NSIC Pentathlon Championships a little over a week ago. UMD also dominated in the 3,000-meter run as three Bulldogs -- freshmen Samantha Rivard (9:45.19) and Breanna Colbenson (9:51.49) and junior Alexandra Rudin finished 2-3-5 and, like Maher and Miller, did so with NCAA II provisional-qualifying efforts. In addition, the distance medley relay team of senior Jacque Thaemert and juniors Molly George, Victoria Zoller and Amanda Boman finished third with a time of 12:36.28.

UMD will look to bring home its first NSIC indoor title in 10 years tomorrow when the two-day event wraps up.
