With
Frank Deluca leading the way, the University of Minnesota Duluth's freshmen class made their presence felt at the two-day Warren Bowlus Open, which wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Deluca, a native of Proctor, Minn., finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.21 and was also part of UMD's title-winning 4 x 400 relay unit. Deluca teammed with fellow rookies
Garrett Benz and
Connor Behm and senior team captain
Phil d'Entremont in that event, clocking in at 3.26.32. Deluca, Behm, freshman
Nick Beattie, and senior
Jacob Nelson placed took second in the 4 x 200 relay, doing so in a time of 1:32.66.
Sophomore
Jason Lilja was the lone Bulldog besides Deluca to capture an individual championship, leaping 6'-04.75" to prevail in the high jump. UMD's other top-five individual places were posted by
Phil d'Entremont (2nd place ; 1:22.09) and
Garrett Benz in the 600-meter run (3rd; 1:23:07); sophomore
Boston Braack (3rd; 1:59.56) and freshman
Josh Peterson (4th; 1:59.63) in the the 800-meter run; junior team captain
Mark Emlaw in the long jump (3rd; 20'-10.50"), senior team captain
Nick Moran in the weight throw (4th; 51'-11.00'), freshman
Grant Pulver in the 5,000-meter run (4th – second among collegiate runners; 15:47.68); and freshman
Nick Beattie in the 200-meter dash (5th; 23.69).
UMD will remain in Duluth next Saturday to compete in the Lake Superior Challenge at the College of St. Scholastica.
