UMASS-LOWELL DOUBLES UP ON BULLDOGS AND HALTS UMD'S FIVE-GAME UNBEATEN STREAK

A three-goal, second period propelled the University of Massachusetts-Lowell to a 6-3 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth and a split of its two-game series with the host Bulldogs Saturday night.

No. 6 UMD, which skated past the No. 7 River Hawks 2-1 in Friday's opener, gave up three unanswered goals in the middle period (including two power play scores) after tying the game at 1-1 with 19 ticks to go before the first intermission on junior left winger Kyle Osterberg's first goal of the season. Trailing 4-1, the Bulldogs struck twice in a span of 52 seconds early in the third with the first of those goals coming on the power play off the stick of junior left winger Austin Farley (his team-leading third of the 2015-16). At the 3:34 mark, junior defenseman Brenden Kotyk beat River Hawk goaltender Kevin Boyle with a shot from the top of the right circle, to cut the UMass-Lowell lead to 4-3, but the River Hawks tacked on a pair of power play goals at 7:21 and 13:03 to ice the victory.

For only the second time this season, the Bulldogs were outshot (31-28) as sophomore Kasimir Kaskisuo (13 saves in two periods of work) and senior Matt McNeely combined to make 25 stops. UMD, now 3-2-1 overall, got points from nine different players and went 1-for-4 on the power play while UMass-Lowell (4-1-2) cashed in on two of its five opportunities.

The Bulldogs will open up National Collegiate Hockey Conference play next Friday and Saturday at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
