For the second time in as many years, the University of Minnesota Duluth walked off the Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids, Minn., with the Bob Waxlax Invitational team championship in tow and, for the second year a row put on a dominating performance.
Only Winona State University junior Seth Reel's first-place effort kept the Bulldogs from posting a perfect team score as they produced the next six finishers and easily outdistanced Minnesota State University-Mankato by 42 points (20 to 62) in the final team standings. A total of six schools, all from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, took part in the event. Minnesota State-Mankato won in a tie-breaker over Winona State, which compiled a team score of 62 points, while St. Cloud State University (106 pts.), Southwest Minnesota State University (156 pts.) and Concordia University-St. Paul (158) were next.
Sophomore
Cody Sedbrook became the first individual to finish first among Bulldogs on two occasions this season (he also was the team leader at the Roy Griak Invitational two weeks ago), taking second overall with a time of 25:41.8. He was followed by four other sophomores --
Josh Peterson (25:43.1),
Henry Jessen (25:47.9)
Alex Naughton (25:53.8) and
Blake Anderson (26:04.6) -- and rookie
Adam Armbruster (26:08.4), who was seventh among meet's 64 competitors.
"This was a good final tune up for the conference meet," said UMD head coach
Paul Nisius. "It was encouraging to see only a 27-second spread between the top six runners, all of whom were underclassmen."
The NSIC Championships, scheduled for Oct. 24 at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course, is next up on UMD's agenda.
