Two meets. Two days. Eight individual champions.
The University of Minnesota Duluth opened up its busiest weekend of the 2015 indoor track and field season with a stop in St. Paul, Minn., Friday for the University of St. Thomas Showcase before returning to the Twin Ports Saturday to compete in the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Yellowjacket Open. In the process, some eight different Bulldogs came away with individual championships.
All eight titles were claimed at the Yellowjacket Open -- senior captains
Nick Moran in the weight throw (56'-09.50") and senior captain
Phil d'Entremont in the 400-meter dash (50:22), junior
Devin Sowers in the shot put (49'-09.25'), sophomore
Ben Hanson in the 800-meter run (2:01.47) and freshmen
Connor Behm in the 200-meter dash (22.96),
Darrick Jackson in the 600-meter run (1:25.78),
Joey Kolpin in the 60-meter dash (7.27), and
Grant Pulver in the one-mile run (4:25.30).
Highlights from the St. Thomas Showcase included
Phil d'Entremont, whose time in the 800-meter meter time of 1:55.33 narrowly missed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by only .08 seconds, and was an indoor lifetime best. In addition, junior
Drew Johnson was the top collegian finisher in the mile (second overall) with a personal best of 4:26.69; sophomore
Boston Braack's performance in the 1,000-meter run was also a lifetime best (2:34.75); and the freshmen trio of
Henry Jessen,
Cody Sedbrook, and Pulver all set collegiate bests in the 3,000 meters with their 4-5-6 finish.
A select number of Bulldogs will close out the weekend with their participation in the two-day Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Heptathlon Championshops, whcih start Sunday in Mankato, Minn.
