University of Minnesota Duluth junior
Drew Johnson set a meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Golden Bear Twilight meet in St. Paul, Minn., Wednesday and was one of four Bulldogs to claim an individual championship.
Johnson clocked in at 9:31.44, which was just .35 seconds shy of the Sea Foam Stadium record. A pair of UMD freshmen --
Henry Jessen (9:58.48) and
Sam Johnson (10:28.92) --Â placed 2-3 in that same event.
Other Bulldogs title winners Wednesday were freshman
Josh Peterson in the 1,500-meter run (4:06.57), senior team captain
Phil d'Entremont in the 800-meter run (1:56.15, just .16 ahead of runnerup
Garrett Benz of UMD), and junior
Brendon Pineda in the shot put (15.98 meters). Pineda, a Bulldog basketball letterman, also took third in the discus throw (45.46 meters) while senior team captain
Nick Moran was second (45.46). Moran also posted that finish in the hammer throw (58.02). Pineda's shot put effort moves him to 1st on the NSIC Honor Roll, and was also a NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark.
In addition, the 4 x 100 relay team of freshman
Joey Kolpin, senior captain
Holden Olson, senior
Jacob Nelson and freshman
Nick Beattie crossed the finish line first in 43.29.
