The University of Minnesota Duluth made some hefty strides -- literary -- at Saturday morning's Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon, Heights, Minn. The youthful Bulldogs placed 10th at the 37-team Maroon Division II event, which was held at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. That's a six-place improvement from a year ago when four less teams took part.
"I'm happy with our young team's performance today," said UMD head coach
Paul Nisius. "You always want to see improvements and we got those this morning."
For the third time in as many meets this season, a different Bulldog led the way as this time it was
Cody Sedbrook's turn. The sophomore from Rosemount, Minn., placed 23rd out of 392 finishers with an 8K time of 27:02. Sophomore
Blake Anderson (45th place; 27:31), freshman
Isaac Overmyer (64th; 27:44), sophomore
Alex Naughton (70th; 27:54), sophomore
Henry Jessen (81st; 28:01), freshman
Adam Armbruster (89th; 28:07) and junior
Ben Hanson (102nd; 28:19) took the next six spots for UMD. Anderson and Sedbrook finished 72nd and 138th, respectively, at the 2014 Roy Griak Invitational.
UMD compiled a team score of 283 while Black Hills State University captured the team title with 93 points. Defending meet champion University of Wisconsin-Parkside was second (96 points), just ahead of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Augustana University (98 points).
The Bulldogs won't return to action until Oct. 9 when it competes in St. Cloud State University's Bob Waxlax Invitational.
