University of Minnesota Duluth juniors
Brian Lee and
Jason Lilja, along with the sprint medley relay team, all captured titles at Saturday's Twin Ports Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Superior -- and did so in record-breaking fashion.
Lee's NCAA Division II provisionally qualifying-toss of 58"-5.25" in the weight throw eclipsed the previous Bulldog record set by
Nick Moran last winter (57'-9.50" at the Minnesota Open on Jan. 17) while Lilja established an all-time Lydia Thering Field House best in the high jump by going 6'-6.75". The 4 x 1,600 relay team of senior
Joey Erickson, junior
Seth Hare, sophomore
Henry Jessen and sophomore
Josh Peterson also carved themselves a spot in the UMD record books, clocking in at 18:13.28 to finish second. The Bulldogs' sprint medley unit, which consisted of sophomores
Connor Behm,
Austin Carlson and
Frank Deluca and junior
Ben Hanson turned in a time of 3:38.24 to establish a Lydia Thering Field House mark.
Lilja, a team captain from Andover, Minn., also placed first in the long jump (22'-0.75") and was joined in the winner's circle by Bulldogs
Ryan Tolkinen, a freshman in the 200-meter hurdles (26.82), fellow freshman
Chris Timm with collegiate best in the pole vault (13'-11.25"), and sophomore
Zach Vieau in the triple jump (a career-long leap of 41'-10.5"). Both UMD's 4 x 800 (Peterson, Hanson and sophomores
Grant Pulver and
Henry Jessen) and distance medley relay (Carlson, Pulver, freshman
Adam Armbruster, and sophomore
Alex Naughton) squads prevailed in times of 8:27.77 and 10:51.68, respectively.
In addition, senior
Mark Emlaw posted a second-place showing in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.37.
The Bulldogs will pay a visit to the University of Wisconsin-Stout campus for the Warren Bowlus Open on Saturday (Jan. 30).
